Call Of Duty Sales 2022 – Why Is The Series Struggling?

New sales data shows that Call of Duty: Vanguard sold fewer units at launch than previous games in the series.

In the UK, it has become the weakest CoD launch in over a decade. But what is driving these lower-than-usual sales? According to gamesindustry.biz, there’s a number of reasons for declining Call of Duty sales.

Working with EGX and PAX, they asked gamers across the UK and US about buying Call of Duty.

What Were The Results?

55% of them said they were busy playing other games. 34% said they’ve played too much Call of Duty in the past. Others were put off by the reviews or the World War II setting, which some have criticised for being too generic at this point.

Interestingly, 14% also said they were perfectly happy with Call of Duty: Warzone. It’s likely that a lot of casual players prefer the free option over buying a new Call of Duty every year.

11% said they were waiting for another game, including Battlefield 2042 and Halo Infinite. It’s possible that strong competition this year has had an impact on Call of Duty’s sales, especially since Halo multiplayer is now free.

Only 6% were turned off by Activision Blizzard being behind the series. The company is currently embroiled in lawsuits after allegedly fostering a toxic work environment of discrimination and harassment. Still, that is certainly playing a part in the new CoD’s reception.

Call of Duty isn’t the only big game series to see a drop this year. Battlefield and Far Cry have struggled, with the former being overtaken by Farming Simulator in player count recently.
