Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, has officially reached a deal to buy Twitter for a staggering $44 billion.
After a few weeks of backstage talk and near misses, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX will purchase the social media giant. In effect, this will turn the platform from a publicly traded company to a privately owned one.

This news comes after Musk criticised the platform for the way that it handles ‘free speech’. In a tweet that followed the announcement of the purchase, Musk said: “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated.
“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating spam bots, and authenticating all humans.
“Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”
While Musk has pledged to take the platform forward in new ways, it remains to be seen how Musk actually alters the platform.
Critics of Elon Musk buying Twitter
While there are some that seem optimistic about Musk’s acquisition of the platform, there are also plenty of critics. US Senator Elizabeth Warren called the deal “dangerous for our democracy”. She also added, “Billionaires like Elon Musk play by a different set of rules than everyone else, accumulating power for their own gain.”
This news arrives after several other large acquisitions in the gaming industry. Earlier this year, Microsoft laid plans to buy Activision Blizzard for nearly $70 billion.
