Next Year’s Call Of Duty Is Modern Warfare 2, Insiders Say

Call of Duty Vanguard might not even be out yet, but it already looks like the entry in the series after that will be Modern Warfare 2.

Relaunched in 2019, Modern Warfare was the reboot/prequel to the classic series. It featured fan favourite characters such as Captain Price, Ghost and Gaz, along with a revamped gameplay style. It remains to be one of my favourite Call of Duty games since the golden era of the original Modern Warfare series.

Any other fans of the reboot will be happy to hear that the series is set to make a return. Industry insiders and outlets such as VGC are reporting that the next entry in the series will be Modern Warfare 2.

MODERN WARFARE 2: 2

Industry insider Tom Henderson reported this week that the 2022 release was currently codenamed Project Cortez. He said the title is “believed” to be a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare. Andy Robinson at VGC confirmed Henderson’s statement against his own sources, and even knew of some story details. Cortez involves “US special forces fighting a covert war against Columbian drug cartels”.

The 2022 game supposedly picked the codename as a reference to Clear and Present Danger. This is the 1994 film featuring Harrison Ford, that has plot similar to the alleged campaign of Cortez. It will likely follow Task Force 141, who were assembled during a post-credits scene in Modern Warfare (2019).

The engine used for Modern Warfare is making its return in Call of Duty Vanguard. You’ll be able to try it out in the beta which launches this weekend (September 16th). Infinity Ward will likely be the ones developing Project Cortez. By the time the game will release (likely around October or November 2022), Infinity Ward will have had around three years to develop Cortez.

Despite rumours spreading already, we likely won’t hear anything official until next Summer. Sledgehammer Games only just announced Vanguard last month. This only left less than three months between reveal and release.
