Battlefield 2042 has turned out to be a commercial failure for EA and DICE. CEO Andrew Wilson stating the following:
“We did have a challenge in Q3 as the launch of Battlefield 2042 did not meet expectations. Battlefield 2042 was always an ambitious game and our teams pushed to innovate across many dimensions including massive scale and 128-player matches, new modes, new dynamic gameplay and more. Developing this game with our teams working from home for nearly two years ultimately proved to be challenging.”
Why is the Battlefield 2042 Player Count so low?
We’ve previously reported on ex-DICE employees who have criticism of the way that Battlefield 2042 is being handled, with David Sirland stating that
“I always believed 48 player on 74 player layouts is the sweetspot personally. Esp with my requirements being 60hz tickrate for it to be enjoyable to be real.”
Another developer had the following to say in a reply to that tweet:
“100% agree. And vehicles need to be on the actual map and limited, none of this ridiculous menu spawning and anything goes mentality. You can’t make a delicious dish by just using every ingredient in the fridge at the same time.”
It’s especially disappointing to see a series as popular as Battlefield fall so low. DICE supposedly has a lengthy amount of post launch content to come, but it’s yet to release any concrete plans.
