Will Smith Apologises For Oscar Slap, Calling It ‘Unacceptable And Inexcusable’

Will Smith has issued an apology following the 2022 Oscars in which he slapped Chris Rock live on stage for jokes made about his wife.

Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s hair, a jab towards her alopecia condition which causes hair loss. He said that he was looking forward to seeing Pinkett-Smith in GI Jane 2, a film where the title character has a shaved head. Of course, there’s a difference between an actor shaving their head out of style and shaving it due to a medical condition.

Smith proceeded to walk on stage and slap Rock in the chest, telling him to “Keep [Smith’s] wife’s name out of [Rock’s] f*cking mouth.” Now, Smith has apologised to Rock for his actions.

The apology reads:

Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions are not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Smith went on to win the award for best actor in his role as Richard Williams in King Richard.
