The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie has seen the biggest opening for a video game movie ever, bringing in over $71 million at the US box office.
We all know that video game movies are notoriously bad. However, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 seems to be finally bucking that trend. A sequel to 2020’s award winning Sonic movie released earlier this month, and it’s proving to be a hit with audiences.

According to a report in Variety, the blue hedgehog’s second outing shot to the top of the domestic box office charts. It took the number one spot above Michael Bay’s ‘Ambulance’ and Sony’s ‘Morbius’, both of which are nothing to shout about. Infact, Morbius is now rated as the second worst Marvel movie ever.

Sonic 2 – Box Office Records
It’s fantastic to see the Sonic movies doing so well. With the films angled towards a younger audience, the series seems to be appealing to a niche that’s ready to receive it. It’s likely that we’ll see a third Sonic movie. That is, if Paramount follows up on promises made in the post credit scene of Sonic 2.
However, doubt is cast over the potential of a third film after Jim Carrey announced his potential retirement plans. Saying that he’s “done enough”, the iconic actor says that he’s very likely to step down from acting soon. However, Paramount has said that if Carrey does retire, the studio won’t recast the character of Dr Robotnik. He’s simply irreplaceable.
