Oscars Board Launches Formal Review Of Will Smith/Chris Rock Incident

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is formally reviewing the Will Smith/Chris Rock incident from Sunday night’s Oscars event.

In an official statement from the organization a spokesperson had the following to say:

The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”

Smith won an Academy Award for Best Actor on Sunday night, for his role as Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena Williams, in King Richard. While Chris Rock declined to press charges after the incident (as stated by the Los Angeles Police Department), The Academy could choose to suspend or bar Smith from any further nominations.

Shortly after the incident, the Academy released a twitter statement on the matter that reads as follows, before later releasing the above statement:

The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”

We’ll know next month as to what the consequences for Smith will be, but until then we can only wait and see. What do you think about the situation? Was Will Smith in the right? Or should he face consequences for his actions? Let us know across our socials!
