LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is bringing back the classic mumble feature that hasn’t been seen since the original classic LEGO games.
TT Games finally unveiled the release date for the new LEGO Star Wars game yesterday, alongside a packed gameplay trailer. It looks to be the biggest and best LEGO game yet with all nine Star Wars films playable. Gameplay has been massively overhauled with proper third person camera controls and reworked combat.
That’s all cool, and all – but it was something else in the trailer that stood out to me and veteran LEGO fans out there. At the end of the trailer, TT Games teases a peek at the Extras menu. These are gameplay modifiers that put neat twists on how a LEGO game looks and plays. There’s the usual suspects of score multipliers and some other funny ones to look forward to. The one that we’re all excited for, though, is the return of mumble mode.
Mumble mumble mumble
Enabling the mumble mode setting will see all LEGO characters speak in a masked voice, rather than using actual voice lines. This is how the LEGO games used to handle speech prior to 2012. In LEGO Lord of the Rings, TT Games started recording voice lines and borrowing them from the movies. It certainly reduced the amount of charm that LEGO games used to have.
All of the characters in LEGO Star War: The Skywalker Saga will be voiced by default. It’s extremely cool to see mumble mode return as an option, though. I certainly can’t wait to relive my nostalgia when the game launches on April 5th 2022.
