Call Of Duty is about to break a twenty year long streak of releasing games annually, according to a new report from Bloomberg.
Call Of Duty has released a new game once a year, every year, for almost 20 years now. However, it appears that streak is to be broken next year.
According to the report, the company is hesitant to release a game next year after a recent entry in the series failed to meet internal expectations. Executives apparently believe that Activision is introducing new versions of the series too quickly, thus hampering growth and stopping the titles from growing. The decision was reportedly not related to the Microsoft acquisition that happened earlier this year.
Activision-Blizzard have released a statement that, weirdly, doesn’t counter anything at all said in the report.
“We have an exciting slate of premium and free-to-play Call Of Duty experiences for the year and beyond. Reports of anything otherwise are incorrect. We look forward to sharing more details when the time is right.”
It’s the ‘And beyond’ here that makes it interesting. It’s a non-committal, non-denial, proving that something might be going on behind the scenes at Acti-Bliz in regards to Call Of Duty after all. Obviously there’s the inherent systematic issues that have been exposed in the company over the last year, but it appears there’s a lot more going on that we’re not hearing about and will likely be learning about over the coming months.
