Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies Needs To Simplify Not Complicate

Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies was unveiled this week, and its harks back to a wilder side of zombies, but it really shouldn’t.

Zombies has been around for a long time, launching back in 2008 with World At War. The mode became an immediate fan favourite, as you and your strived to last as long as possible. It was a mode that appealed to a lot of people as a straightforward experience. All you had to do was shoot zombies. How fun!

Zombies has since had a varied existence across the franchises multiple settings. Next up we have Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies, which takes us back to a WW2 setting. And it is complicating the game mode when it should really be simplifying it.

LESS IS MORE

Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies acts a continuation of the Dark Aether storyline which was founded in Black Ops Cold War. Cold War was one of the best takes on the genre that we’ve seen in a long time. It managed to find the balance between the denser takes and the simple and fun. As a big fan of the latter, I had a great time with Cold War Zombies without ever having to worry about too many of the games varying mechanics.

Learning that Treyarch would be focusing on the next take, I had hoped that it would strike that balance once more. However, it seems that Treyarch are intent on returning to the days of Black Ops 3. Admittedly, there are fans of the more complicated takes on the genre. Some zombie player love to dig into the various easter eggs, diverse systems and labyrinth-like maps. However, what made Zombies so appealing in the first place is its simplicity. Gear up, upgrade your loadout, survive.

That baseline is still there to some degree, but with named villains and new loadout system Treyarch want players to delve into the complicated nature of this new zombies. It has even teased players with an original map easter egg in Cold War’s final zombies map. You can read up on what we know of Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies here.
