The developer of Call of Duty Mobile has opened up a new studio to create a brand new online shooter, led by Halo and Battlefield veterans.
TiMi Studio Group is responsible for developing several hit mobile titles, including COD Mobile and Honor of Kings. This new studio is a division of Tencent and will be known as TiMi Seattle.
The team is already made up of 25 people with video game veterans Scott Warner and Rosi Zagorcheva at the helm. Warner has experience on the Halo franchise – he was the lead designer of Halo 4. Zagoracheva also comes from a shooter background. She was the senior director on EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront, Battlefield 4 and Battlefield V.
Big brains, big budget
Warner has said that the team is working on an original game but isn’t ready to disclose any concrete details yet. In an interview with GamesBeat, he says:
“We’re working on a first-person shooter, competitive game, live service, with a lot of people assembled who have made those games for quite some time. We are concentrating on PC and console for now. But ultimately, we want our game to be played on as many platforms as it can be.”
Zagoracheva says that she’s excited to get to work on a new project of such scale:
“What attracted me was the new IP and the triple-A scale. That’s a rare opportunity in the industry. And possibly what I’m even more excited about is this chance to do everything right, to create a studio to create a culture, to form a team with no baggage – a clean slate to create something amazing.”
With a budget as large as Tencent’s and industry knowledge as broad as the talent onboard, it’s hard to not get excited about what the team will be cooking up. It certainly adds fuel to our argument that we could be about to enter a new online shooter golden era!
With the studio just forming, the project is likely in very early pre-production. We likely won’t see anything of it for a few years yet.
