Shrek is arguably one of the greatest movies of all time, and it’s aged pretty damn well considering it’s now 17 years old. It’s seen a number of sequels, spin-offs and memes featuring everyone’s favourite green ogres.
The success of the Shrek franchise means the inevitable has finally happened – this Hollywood cash cow is set to get the reboot treatment.
According to Variety, Universal Pictures has hired Chris Meledandri to undertake the task of a soft-reboot for Shrek and its spin-off movie, Puss In Boots.
If you’re not familiar with Meledandri’s name, you’re definitely familiar with his creations, as he’s the mastermind behind the insanely-popular Despicable Me.
Naturally, the internet has a lot to say on the matter…

However it might not be time to grab your pitchforks and riot, because Meledandri is reportedly keen to keep the cast of the original movies where possible, including Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey and Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots.
Speaking to Variety about undertaking the mammoth task, Meledandri stated: “When you look back on [the original] vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations.
“The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”
