Respawn Entertainment has promised to pour more efforts into tackling cheaters in Apex Legends.
There’s nothing more infuriating than coming up against a cheater in online games. The pain is even worse when it’s a battle royale that you’re playing – where one death can often mean the end of the match.
As long as online games exist, so will cheaters. Games like Apex Legends are frequently host to disingenuous players – look at this blatant aimbot from earlier this week.
Pro players call for action
The rampancy of cheaters has led to some content creators and professional players starting the hashtag ‘#SaveApexRanked’. NRG player Chris ‘sweetdreams’ Sexton wrote a lengthy Twitlonger post describing how the state of Apex Legends at high ranks is barely playable.
“Myself and almost every NA/EU streamers or public competitive figure have come together because we literally can’t see the game spiral further out of control,” he says. “Ranked is the backbone of apex and we can’t take it much longer. We have been offered empty promises of focus on the issue which from a results standpoint have been complete lies.”
The hashtag circulated around the Apex community until it eventually became trending on Twitter. Other prominent users chipped in, including TSM’s ‘ImperialHal’, NRG’s ‘Rogue’, and TSM’s ‘Snip3down’.

If you like ranked, or just wanna help the game to be better, very simply, fucking tweet out #SaveApexRanked

We all love Apex and are very appreciative of what it has done for many of us, this is why fellow pros and I have come together to speak up on the issues we have been having, please give this a thorough read as it comes from a good place! #SaveApexRanked https://t.co/96AJ7Amtmj

What is Respawn doing to get rid of cheaters?
Around the same time as the hashtag began trending, Respawn issues a short statement about its commitment to combating cheaters. It says that it’s hiring more people to focus on manual bans, is developing more tools to automatically detect and prevent DDOS attacks, and is investigating ways to catch and remove cheaters more quickly.
The Respawn team is pursuing several options to crack down on cheating in @playapex:

🛑 Investigating ways to more quickly catch and remove cheaters from games
“Playing against cheaters sucks,” Respawn affirms. “We’ll keep you updated as we ship the above changes and pursue new ones.”
Back in April, a member of online security at Respawn, Conor Ford, tweeted that a Japanese equivalent of his role was opening up. Ford regularly updates the Apex community on prominent ban waves and is in charge of much of the back end work that goes on to keep Apex cheater free.

The job opening is a sign that Respawn is moving in the right direction to eradicate cheaters from the game. Activision and Raven Software have also taken a similar stance on cheaters. The creative director of Warzone recently said that cheaters are “ruining some of the best work I’ve done in my life.”
