Respawn Entertainment Is Working On A New IP

A job listing at Respawn Entertainment indicates that it is starting development on a new project. Unfortunately for fans, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a third entry to the Titanfall franchise.

The listing appeared last week when Steven Kah Hien Wong, a game programmer at Respawn, tweeted a link to the job. He captioned the link with:

“Want to get in early and help build a new IP from scratch? We’re a team of *5* right now looking for our 6th (a coder)!”

Vince Zampella, head of Respawn Entertainment, later retweeted Wong and added his own commentary. He describes the project as an exciting new opportunity and something totally new for Respawn.

The only hint we have as to what this new project might look like is a short line from the job posting. Listed under the ‘Why Join Us’ subheading, a bullet point reads: “Pioneer new ways to enable “adventuring until the heat death of the universe”.”

The short line doesn’t give away much, but it might indicate another game set on other worlds in the universe, much like Titanfall. It also sounds like the project will feature more exploration than the linear corridor-shooting that Titanfall usually offers.

With only five members on the development team and a sixth on the way, this new IP seems to be in the very early stages of development. It’ll likely be several years before we even see a glimpse of what the project will look like.

What else is Respawn working on?

Respawn Entertainment certainly seems to have its hands full at the moment. Apex Legends is ticking along nicely with Season 9 about to drop next week and a mobile port of the game just entering the regional testing phase. It doesn’t look like Apex is slowing down anytime soon, either. The developer already has the next three Legends locked in place, with preliminary plans for Seasons 13 and 14 next year.

On top of that, the team is also hard at work on a sequel to their Star Wars project, Jedi: Fallen Order. The team also recently released Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, an experience tailored specifically for VR.

Though it doesn’t appear that Respawn is working on a new Titanfall game anytime soon, that hasn’t stopped the replies on Twitter from speculating (or should we say wishfully thinking?).

While it would be great to see Titans return in a formal capacity, it will still be exciting to see the talent at Respawn experiment with the games they create.
