It might seem like it’s been a while since we got our last big look at what’s to come, but a new PlayStation Showcase is all about the future of PS5.
PlayStation has hosted its own State of Play events in the past. These have showcased big titles like Deathloop and Horizon Zero Dawn. However, while State of Plays usually focus on a single title, or small group of them, the upcoming PlayStation Showcase will focus on “PlayStation Studios and some of the industry’s most imaginative developers“.
You can tune into the PlayStation Showcase when it streams on September 9th.
The Future of PS5
As has been the case for many studios, the pandemic has caused a lot of delays. This has resulted in many reluctant studios struggling to announce concrete release dates, that can now easily be pushed back. Recently, Sony announced that Horizon Forbidden West was pushed back into 2022, after a 2021 release became unrealistic.
While we don’t know exactly what games will show, Sony teased that it would showcase “games releasing this holiday and beyond“. Looking ahead at the releases left for this year, hopefully we will get our first proper look at Battlefield 2042. With its beta rumoured to launch late September, its announcement at the Showcase would make sense.
Looking ahead of course, many gamers will be praying for a tease of the God of War sequel. Announced in 2020, Santa Monica studios was aiming for a 2021 release. However, it was eventually pushed back into 2022. Hopefully, we’ll see something God of War related at the PlayStation Showcase. Honestly, at this point, I’d take a single screenshot of the game.
The showcase will run at around 40 minutes in length, and will feature a range of PS5 titles both “large and small“. However, one absence that Sony has been upfront about is PSVR 2. Announced in February, we knew that PSVR 2 wouldn’t be launching in 2021, but the jury is still out on whether we’ll see a 2022 release.
The PlayStation Showcase will stream live on Twitch and YouTube on Thursday the 9th of the September. For British viewers, the stream will kick off at 9 PM.
