It has been revealed that John Williams personally asked to write the new theme for Obi-Wan Kenobi in the latest Disney+ TV show.
Star Wars is full of iconic melodies in its soundtrack, many of which are specific to certain characters. Duel of the Fates is synonymous with Darth Maul, while Leia’s theme is another standout piece. However, it turns out that the iconic Obi-Wan Kenobi has never actually had a theme tune of his own – until now.

Return of the John Williams – Obi-Wan Kenobi
The Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show is fast approaching, and the composer for the show has given an interview with Vanity Fair. Natalie Holt has composed much of the music for Obi-Wan Kenobi – you might recognise her from her work on Loki. While Holt has undertaken the brunt of the task, John Williams stepped in to write the main theme for the iconic character.
“Obi-Wan is a legacy character that John hadn’t written a theme for because he died quite early on in A New Hope. It’s the only legacy character that he hadn’t done,” Holt explained. Ben Kenobi famously died in the second act of A New Hope as the three protagonists escape the Death Star.
“So he spoke to [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy and said, “I just want to write Benny a theme.” So who can deny him that? And he did, he wrote the Obi theme, and it just embodies the spirit of the show entirely,” Holt finishes.
It’s heartwarming to think that John Williams wanted to return to Star Wars to honour the late Alec Guiness. Holt clearly thinks highly of the composers work on this new series. I can’t wait to hear what it all sounds like.
