The head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has confirmed that Call of Duty games will still release on PlayStation consoles. This is after this week’s news that Microsoft is set to acquire Activision Blizzard in a shocking near $70 billion deal.
Microsoft surprised the entire gaming sphere when it made the announcement on Tuesday that it is acquiring Activision Blizzard. The publisher has been in hot water for the last several month as it’s embroiled in a lawsuit over its poor working conditions and ‘fratboy’ working culture.
The acquisition will mean that studios under the Activision Blizzard label will soon become first party studios for Xbox. That caused concern for PlayStation players. When Microsoft acquired Bethesda in 2020, the company made it clear that upcoming Bethesda games would be Xbox exclusive.

Could the same happen to Call of Duty?
As one of the biggest game series in the entire world, losing Call of Duty on PlayStation would be a huge blow for Sony. Thankfully, it looks like team blue will still be quick scoping and drop-shotting for years to come. Spencer confirmed in a tweet that Xbox has every intention to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation.
“Had good calls this week with leaders at Sony. I confirmed our intent to honor all existing agreements upon acquisition of Activision Blizzard and our desire to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation,” he said. “Sony is an important part of our industry, and we value our relationship.”
It will take a while for the Activision Blizzard purchase to finalise – it probably won’t be until 2023. Things could all change by then, but it’s looking promising for now.
