Pro Gaming DOTA 2 Team Wins More Prize Money Than Many Top Athletes Earn in a Year

Footballers earn a tonne of money. This is a well known fact, albeit one that upsets pretty much everyone that isn’t a footballer. Depending on where you stand, you’re either about to feel a little better, or a whole lot more pissed. Roll on DOTA 2’s biggest annual tournament, The International…

Turns out, footballers aren’t the only people earning a whole lot of everything for doing a whole lot of nothing (I’m kidding, chill). Professional gamers also stand to make a massive amount through tournaments and such. In fact, the winners of The International are set to take home $1.75 million EACH for their recent victory. That’s an insane amount of money – but then again, these players possess an insane amount of skill. They won $8.8 million dollars collectively.

The skills in question don’t come easily, either. They require thousands upon thousands of hours of training and practicing for the big event. Chances are, if you were to play your favorite game of all time for that long, you’d get pretty sick of it, pretty damn fast. Good thing you’re not a professional gamer, huh? Unless you are…

The team that won this year’s International will take home, collectively, over $8.8 million. The winning team for the 2014 World Cup took home collectively more than that, but it breaks down for less money for each player. Overall, they took home $35 million, but per player, the payout was $1.52 million.

Maybe we should all start improving our DOTA 2 skills and spice things up a little. Or not.
