According to insider information, Battlefield 2042 was originally meant to have far more ambitious weather effects, including earthquakes, fire tornadoes, tsunamis, and volcanoes.
A big focus for Battlefield 2042 is the dynamic weather effects that can completely change up a match. A huge tornado has a chance to appear on most of the maps while a sandstorm can appear on others. However, DICE originally had much bigger plans for the post-modern shooter.
According to industry insider Tom Henderson, there were originally plans for Battlefield 2042 to include earthquakes, fire tornadoes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. Henderson was apparently made aware of these features from a behind-closed-doors presentation from summer 2020. This was likely when Battlefield 2042 was very early in development which is why most of these features were cut from the final release.
While having more adverse weather effects in Battlefield 2042 would have been cool to look at, I’m not so sure it would have been beneficial for gameplay. After seeing the current tornadoes in practice, they seem to cause more of a hindrance than provide gameplay benefits. Maybe this was the conclusion that DICE reached during development.
Still, there might be a chance that we see some of these weather conditions appear in future game updates. Battlefield 2042 is supposed to see lengthy live service support with new maps, modes, and specialists. However, there’s currently no word on when the first season will begin despite the game launching over a month ago.
