Amouranth Has Twitch Ad Revenue Revoked After Hot Tub Controversy

It appears as though Twitch has disabled the monetisation of Amouranth, one of the platforms most prolific hot tub streamers.

It comes after Twitch has remained relatively silent on the ‘Hot Tub Meta’ controversy. The only comment so far has come from a representative who claimed “[the] nudity and attire policy does allow bathing suits in an appropriate context and hot tubs do fall under that criteria.”

If you’re unfamiliar, the Hot Tub Meta is a trend where streamers stream themselves sitting in hot tubs while chatting with viewers. While some found the practice harmless, other streamers were quick to voice their concerns. Some even went as far as to label the trend as “trash” and “obviously sexualised”.

Despite criticism, Twitch has remained silent on the matter, indicating that the act of sitting in a hot tub doesn’t breach its community guidelines.

“This is an ALARMING precedent…”

That’s until yesterday when Twitch seemingly suspended Kaitlyn ‘Amouranth’ Siragusa’s advertising revenue indefinitely. She has been one of the biggest advocates for hot tub streams, previously saying that “people extrapolate their own agenda onto the meta”.

According to Amouranth, Twitch didn’t contact her directly about disabling her ad revenue. She has criticised their approach, condemning the action as an “alarming precedent”.

“This is an ALARMING precedent and serves as a stark warning that although content may not ostensibly break community guidelines or Terms of Service, Twitch has complete discretion to target individual channels & partially or wholly demonetized them for content that is deemed “not advertiser-friendly”, something that there is no communicated guideline for,” Amouranth continues in a series of tweets.

Since the rise of the meta, Twitch has seemingly banned mention of the words “hot tub”. When viewers tried to type the words into some chat boxes, an error message wouldn’t allow them. Apparently, the phrase “conflicts with the channel’s moderation settings.”

At the time of writing, Amouranths advertising capabilities remain revoked. Twitch is yet to respond publicly.
